For the frosting:

- 2/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions



To make the cake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix together the oil, white sugar, and brown sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Spread evenly into the prepared pan.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until the top of the cake springs back when lightly pressed. Let cool in the pan.

To make the custard filling: In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth. Place the mixture in a medium saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture has thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and butter. Let cool.

To assemble the cake: Once the cake and custard have cooled, spread the custard over the cake. In a medium saucepan, melt the chocolate chips and butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Spread the frosting over the cake.
