Ingredients

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3/4 cup of butter, softened
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of burnt caramel (or use store-bought burnt caramel sauce)
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch cake pan or line it with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract. Add the dry ingredients gradually and mix until just combined.

Step 2: Make the burnt caramel and fold into the cake batter.

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and cook until it is golden brown and has a nutty aroma, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream. Add the burnt caramel and stir until combined. Allow to cool slightly before folding into the cake batter.

Step 3: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts, if desired.
