Ingredients

Cake:

- 2 cups all-purpose flour

- 3/4 cup cocoa powder

- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

- 1/2 teaspoon salt

- 1 cup butter, softened

- 2 eggs

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- 1 cup buttermilk

- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips



Frosting:

- 1 cup butter, softened

- 4 cups confectioners' sugar

- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

- 4-5 tablespoons milk or cream

- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Cake

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans.



2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.



3. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla extract and mix until well combined.



4. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk and beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Stir in the chocolate chips. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans.



5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

1. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract and milk or cream. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.



2. Stir in the chocolate chips. Spread the frosting over the top of the cooled cake and serve.
