Ingredients

For the custard:

- 2 cups of milk

- 4 egg yolks

- 2 tablespoons of sugar

- 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

- 3 tablespoons of cornstarch

- Pinch of salt

For the cake:

- 2 cups of all-purpose flour

- 1 cup of cocoa powder

- 1 teaspoon of baking soda

- 1 teaspoon of baking powder

- 1/2 teaspoon of salt

- 1 cup of sugar

- 1/2 cup of vegetable oil

- 2 eggs

- 1 cup of buttermilk

- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

For the topping:

- 1/2 cup of sugar

- 1/4 cup of water

- 2 tablespoons of butter

- 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch springform pan with butter and line the bottom with parchment paper. Set aside.

2. Make the custard: In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, vanilla essence, cornstarch, and salt. Slowly add the heated milk to the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the saucepan and place it over medium heat. Cook the custard, stirring constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Remove the custard from heat and pour it into the prepared springform pan.

3. Make the cake: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a large bowl, beat together the sugar, oil, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is light and fluffy. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until the batter is smooth.

4. Pour the batter over the custard in the pan and spread it evenly. Bake the cake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool before removing it from the pan.

5. Make the topping: In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the butter and stir until the mixture is smooth and glossy. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the walnuts. Pour the topping over the cooled cake and spread it evenly. Let the cake sit for at least 1 hour before serving.
